Buyers increasingly ask an assistant before they search. Instead of ten links, they get one synthesized answer with a handful of citations. If your brand is not among those sources, you are absent from the conversation, however well you rank on page one.

How answer engines choose what to cite

Most answer engines that browse the web follow a similar pattern. They take the question, retrieve candidate pages from a search index, select the clearest and most trustworthy passages, write an answer, and link the sources they used. ChatGPT search, for example, draws on third-party search providers, which is why classic indexing still matters.

How an answer engine builds a cited answerA buyer asks a question. The assistant retrieves pages from a search index, selects clear, trusted and relevant sources, synthesizes one answer, and cites the sources it used. AEO vs. SEO

SEO earns a place in the index and a position in the results. AEO makes your page the passage an assistant lifts into its answer. The two overlap heavily: an assistant cannot cite a page it cannot crawl. The difference is emphasis. AEO rewards pages that answer one question directly in the first lines, use the buyer's own wording, and back claims with specifics and sources.

An AEO checklist

  1. 1CrawlableAllow search and AI crawlers in robots.txt; keep pages fast and server-rendered
  2. 2Answer-firstOpen each page with a 40–60 word direct answer to the question it targets
  3. 3Question-shapedUse the buyer's exact questions as headings and in an FAQ
  4. 4StructuredAdd Organization, Article, FAQPage and Service structured data
  5. 5SpecificUse numbers, definitions and comparisons an assistant can quote
  6. 6SourcedCite sources and dates; show who wrote it and why they know
  7. 7ConsistentDescribe your brand the same way on your site, LinkedIn and directories
  8. 8MeasuredTrack a fixed question set across assistants every month

Crawler access

AI providers run their own crawlers, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Anthropic's ClaudeBot. Check that your robots.txt allows the ones you want to reach. Google's AI Overviews rely on Googlebot, so standard Google crawling and indexing apply. Separately, the Google-Extended token controls whether content is used for Gemini model training.

Structured data and llms.txt

Structured data (schema.org markup) tells machines what a page is: an organization, an article, a service, a set of questions and answers. It makes facts unambiguous. llms.txt is a proposed convention for giving AI tools a clean, plain-text summary of a site. Support across providers is uneven, so treat it as a cheap extra rather than a strategy.

How to measure AEO

  • Write down 20–30 questions your buyers actually ask
  • Each month, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google, and record whether you are mentioned or cited
  • Track referral traffic from those assistants in your analytics
  • Watch which pages get cited, and rebuild the ones that never are

Who should own AEO

AEO sits across content, technical SEO and data, which is why it often falls between teams. In the MEaaS model it belongs to Search & Discovery Engineering, one of the five disciplines of the marketing engineer role. If you want it done, not just discussed, talk to us.
